    Herb's Description

    Pterocarpus santalinus Linn.. A small to medium sized deciduous tree, up to 11 m in height and 1.5 m in girth. Bark deeply cleft into rectangular plates, and exuding a deep red sap when cut, blackish-brown sapwood is white but heartwood claret-purple with streaks of purplish-black or almost black. Leaves generally imparipinnate, leaflets '3 or 5. Flowers yellow, borne in simple or sparingly branched racemes. Pods .woolly, central hard and long portion containing the seeds. Seeds smooth, coriaceous, reddish-brown
